For people with an insatiable curiousity
about Black people, art and culture.
Obsidian Arts, Inc.
Obsidian Arts was formally established in 2001 after working as an informal arts collective since 1996 when we implemented the celebrated Celebration of Life Mural. We secured our 501©3 and gallery space in 2003.
Mission and Goals
Obsidian Arts participates in the global dialogue about black visual culture by working with artists and curators to penetrate, examine, and enliven both historical and contemporary ideas. Operationally Obsidian Arts advocates and supports the creation of art by artists, the research of art by curators and historians, and the communities’ access to the social utility of visual arts.
Obsidian Arts operates a black art history library, supports a skill development network for emerging artist, and develops custom community art history workshops. Additionally, Obsidian Arts produces 4 to 5 exhibitions annually in the gallery and alternative spaces. Periodically our original exhibitions are invited to travel to art venues around the United States.
